How to Connect a USB MIDI Keyboard to Your Browser
Playing on a real keyboard feels much better than clicking on a screen. If you own a USB MIDI keyboard, you can use it with Hey Piano 4U directly in your browser, with no driver to install in most cases.
What MIDI is
MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is a standard that lets instruments and computers exchange messages such as “note C4 pressed” and “note C4 released”. A MIDI keyboard does not carry a sound inside the cable; it sends those messages, and the computer or the web page makes the sound.
What you need
- A MIDI keyboard or controller with a USB connection, or a Bluetooth MIDI keyboard that your computer supports.
- A browser that supports the Web MIDI feature. Chromium-based browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge support it. Support in other browsers varies and has changed over time; Safari has not supported it, so please check your browser’s current documentation.
- A secure (HTTPS) page. Hey Piano 4U is served over HTTPS.
Steps
- Plug the keyboard into your computer with its USB cable and switch it on.
- Open the Hey Piano 4U home page in your browser.
- Press Connect MIDI keyboard.
- When your browser asks for permission to use MIDI devices, choose Allow.
- Press a key. The matching key on the screen should light up and the sound should play.
If nothing happens
- Check the cable and try another USB port. Some cables are charge-only and carry no data.
- Close other programs that may be using the keyboard, such as music software, and reload the page.
- Make sure you allowed MIDI access. In Chrome, you can check this in the site settings from the icon next to the address bar.
- Try a different browser from the supported list above.
- Make sure the keyboard is not set to a special mode (some controllers have a computer or MIDI-over-USB switch).
Keyboard size
Hey Piano 4U shows 61 keys, from C2 to C7. If your keyboard has fewer keys, use its octave buttons to shift the range. If it has 88 keys, notes outside the range of the on-screen keyboard are not shown.
Privacy
The page reads your notes only to make sound and light keys. Nothing you play is recorded or sent anywhere. See our privacy policy.
