Play Christmas Carols on Piano Free: Light-Up Keys
Want to play a carol by Christmas without learning to read music? These three tunes are public-domain carols, arranged simply for learning. Open one and the keys light up in order, with a countdown, and the song waits for you to press each lit key. There is no sign-up, and it works on a computer, tablet or phone.
A four-week plan
- Week 1: Start with Silent Night. Use Watch, then Follow at 60% speed. Aim to finish one full run.
- Week 2: Add Jingle Bells and play along at 70% speed.
- Week 3: Learn We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Try the Choir voice to hear it sung.
- Week 4: Play all three at 85% or 100% in Play along mode, then share your score.
Make it sound like Christmas
Turn the instrument dial to Organ for a church sound or Choir for a sung sound. Both hold each note as long as you press the key, which suits slow carols such as Silent Night. Our guide to the synth choir explains how the voice is made.
Why these carols are free to play
The carols here are old enough to be in the public domain. Silent Night was written in 1818, Jingle Bells was published in 1857, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas is a traditional English carol. Recent Christmas hits are still protected by copyright, so they are not included. Read more in our guide to public-domain music.
Play with family
Hand the keyboard to a child and let them follow the lights, or try the Play along panel to jam over a backing track. Share your score card with the challenge link and see if someone else can beat it.
