PianoLearn piano, organ & choir with light-up keys
Press the Space bar (or tap the big button) each time a key glows green. You can't hit a wrong note, and the numbers count down to the end of the song. Start slow and speed up when you feel ready.
Song library
Tunes are public-domain compositions; scales, exercises and etudes are original and free to use. Simplified arrangements.
Organ listening room
Real organ recordings to listen to. They are audio, so the keys do not light up; use the song library above to play along. Play them here, or open the original on the Internet Archive.
Public-domain and CC0 recordings need no credit. Recordings marked CC BY or CC BY-SA must be credited if you publish or share them; use "Copy credit". Please also check the licence on each Internet Archive page.
Practice & sound
Coach
Play along pick a backing track
Accompany a recording: your keyboard comes out on one side and the track on the other, or both in the middle. Use headphones for the split. Files you choose stay on your device; nothing is uploaded.
Your keyboard plays in free-play while the track runs. Choose any piano, organ or choir sound with the dial. Streaming services such as Apple Music or Spotify cannot be mixed in here: they protect their audio, so a web page cannot route it. Use a file you own or a recording you are licensed to use. The 100 “My instrumentals” are original instrumentals made by the site owner with AI music software; the organ recordings are listed with their licences in the Organ listening room.

About Hey Piano 4U

Hey Piano 4U turns your browser into a practice keyboard. Every note in a song lights its key at the moment you should press it and keeps it lit for as long as you should hold it, so you learn the order, the rhythm and the note lengths together. It is free to use and needs no account.
How it works
The keys you need to press glow green. Each step needs just one key press; if a step has several notes (both hands, or a chord), that one key plays the rest for you. A countdown number on each key shows the order: the first key shows how many steps the song has, the next shows one less, and the count falls to 1 on the very last note. A wrong note flashes red.
Watch plays the song for you so you can see the lights and hear the tune. Follow waits for you: the song pauses until you press the lit key, so you can go at your own pace. Play along keeps time like a real performance and scores your timing, then points out the bars that gave you trouble and lets you loop them at a slower speed.
For experienced players
Switch Play style to Designated keys and every note is yours: each green key has its own number, both hands play their own parts, and chords need all of their keys at once. Pair it with Play along and a MIDI keyboard for a full practice run at the written tempo.
Piano, organ and choir
Turn the instrument dial to choose a sound. Piano mode rings and fades like a real piano. Organ mode uses nine drawbars and an optional rotary effect, and each note sustains for exactly as long as you hold the key. Choir mode is a synthesised choir: stacked, slightly detuned voices pass through vowel filters (Ah, Eh, Ee, Oh, Oo), so you can pick the vowel the choir sings, add vibrato and choose between a solo voice, a choir or a hall-sized ensemble. Songs such as Amazing Grace, Silent Night and Ode to Joy sound especially good on the organ or the choir.
What you can play it with
Use your mouse or touchscreen, your computer keyboard, or a USB MIDI keyboard through your browser. MIDI works in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers; Safari does not support it yet.
Songs
The playable songs are public-domain tunes or original exercises, and the arrangements are simplified for learning. Left-hand parts are kept easy on purpose.
From the same studio
Hey Piano 4U is a sibling of Hey DJ 4U, a free browser mixer for the year’s big hits. Heard a song you like there? Come back here and learn to play the melodies. Practising and want something to play over? Try the Play along panel.
Privacy
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you play is recorded or sent anywhere, and a connected MIDI keyboard is only used to play notes on this page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hey Piano 4U really free?
Yes. It is free to use, with no account, no download and no sign-up. The site may show advertising in future to help cover costs.
Do I need a piano or MIDI keyboard to use it?
No. You can play with your mouse, a touch screen or your computer keyboard. If you own a USB MIDI keyboard, you can connect it in a Chromium-based browser such as Chrome or Edge.
How do the light-up keys work?
The keys you should press glow green and show a countdown number, so you always know the order. In Any key mode, one press plays the whole step, including both hands and chords. A wrong note flashes red.
What is the difference between Piano, Organ and Choir mode?
Piano notes ring and fade after you press a key. Organ notes sustain for exactly as long as you hold the key, and the organ has nine drawbars and a rotary speaker setting you can adjust. Choir notes also sustain while you hold the key, but they swell in gently and are shaped by a vowel (Ah, Eh, Ee, Oh or Oo) that you choose, with a choice of solo voice, choir or hall-sized ensemble and adjustable vibrato.
Is the choir a recording of real singers?
No. The choir voice is synthesised in your browser. Stacked, slightly detuned sawtooth waves pass through three band-pass filters that imitate the resonances of the mouth for each vowel. It is an approximation for practice, not a sampled choir, and it has no words.
Which songs are included?
More than 120 songs and exercises: public-domain tunes such as nursery songs, hymns and classical themes, plus original scales, arpeggios, chord drills, blues patterns, etudes and choir warm-ups. You can search the library and filter by category and level.
Can I practise slowly?
Yes. Every song can be slowed to 40% of normal speed. Follow mode waits for you at every step, and the coach can loop the bars you find hardest.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes, with touch. Browser support for MIDI keyboards varies by device and browser.
Does Hey Piano 4U collect my data?
No account or personal details are needed. Your scores and badges are stored only in your browser. See the privacy policy for details.
